Hi I'm new here and I hope someone can help me..

I just bought a 1971 Steury 16' Open Hull with a 1972 Johnson 50HP OB.

The steering cables are toast on this thing, cracked and rusted..

I've been told this steering system is dangerous, even with new cables. I can't really imagine why it would be, but what are my options.

Is there a way to convert the motor to a newer style steering? It DOES NOT have the steering tube hole like newer outboards.

Over all the boat is awesome. Very good condition for the year. Even the original seats are in good shape!

Not a bad deal for $600 I think as long as the steering problem is resolved.

Re: Steering Help Please

yes it can be retrofitted with a rotary helm, theres a peice that clamps onto the OB for the steering to hook up to, but personally id just go to the hardware store and get some new cables.
