i have a welcraft 186 eclips 3.7 mercraft the steering helm apears to be the rotor singel cable with a 18" plastic tube on top. I have a slip in the steering
when i crank the wheel around. Is this fixable or do I need a new one? :(

Re: steering gearbox (helm)

Thank you for the reply.
Now I am faced with another delema, the counsel behind the steering wheel
does not have a bezel to remove so I can gain access to the bolts that secure the helm. Must I cut a small diameter hole in the dash or remove the
front windsheld then the dash to access the helm bolts? Sorry but im at this for the first time and looking for some direction.::eek:

Re: steering gearbox

thats kinda , how was your boat put together question. there should be a way to get the rack off your steering wheel. without ripping everything apart. its gonna depend on the system installed

Re: steering gearbox

let's determine what you have first. the top is rotary, bottom is rack. with either there is a nut in the center of the wheel that has to be removed, and then the wheel removed. then there should be 3 screws to remove. exception, there were some really old models that had a nut on the underneath side that had to be removed. a picture of you assembly would help.

Re: steering gearbox (helm)

Thank you all for the help.

The pic of the helm on tashasdaddy reply post is like the one on my boat. the three bolts that mount the helm to the back side of the dash and bracket are not accessible from the front of the dashboard behind the steering wheel.
With a hole saw just big enough to get at the three bolts I'll cut a hole behind the steering wheel then when I am finished with the assembly I'll cover the hole with a just slightly larger round piece of black plexiglass and mount it with three counter sunk black screws.

Thanx Tas for the alternator response I'll remember to drink one for you on the lake in my boat on 10/27/;)
