The original steering system on my boat was a single long steel cable that started at the motor, went down one side of the boat, then wrapped around the steering wheel and the back down the other side of the boat ending on the other side of the motor

I don't like this and want to replace it with a less complicated system that doesn't use pulleys and cable, i was thinking hydraulic maybe, but i am not sure what i should get or if there is a better system, i want a complete system under $200 if possible and i have full access to a well equipped machine shop if that helps me

I have a 15' fiberglass fishing boat with a 1964 40hp Johnson electromatic super sea horse

If you upgrade to the typical single steering cable system, you will need the whole kit- which will include a new helm gearbox. Could be in the $250 range. That does not come with a steering wheel, so check to see if yours will fit the new steering shaft on the gearbox. Likely your engine does not have the tilt tube (standard on today's engines) to accept the steering cable on the engine end. You will have to purchase an adapter tube assembly (check in the Land and Sea Marine catalog) to make it work. Also, you will need a link arm at the back which is sold separately. Whole setup could be in the $450 range. The conversion is not bad and you will definitely like the feel of the new system.
