I can't get my steering cable out of the shaft at the seering wheel. I have a 1976 or 77 - 55hp Evinrude. My steering cable rotted and will not work. So, I decided to take it off and take it to a shop. I removed the cable at the motor with not many problems, then went to take the shaft out from beneath the wheel... not enough room between the wheel and the fiberglass.

Am I approaching this incorrectly? (please excuse incorrect term usage)

1 - approximately 1'4"- 1'8" fixed steel casing with threaded shaft which engages a sprocket at wheel junction.
2 - approximately 1'2" room between side of boat and end of housing tube.

I figured I could just cut the cable and probably get it out, however, how do I get the same back in without damage???

Re: steering cable help

Hi Ruffduff....

Under the dash....do you see a long square or cylindrical tube or a round type gizmo?

If it's long square or a cylinder type thing, thats a rack system. there should be about four bolts holding it to the helm assembly. Take these bolts out and the rack will come lose. If it's that round gizmo, that's a *something* (got a brain cramp)....anyway....where the steering cable meets the round gizmo, there should be a nut or someway to disconnect the cable from the housing. Undo this and the steering cable will pull out.
