I have a 1993 200 HP merc. The tach isn't working and the voltmeter is eratic. Does this indicate that the stator needs replacement. The boat overheated a few times and I read some where the Coating on the stator could be melted.

that's true about the stator, if the covering is melted then it got really really hot.
you might be able to shine a flashlight under the flywheel and see if you see any melted strings of plastic. you also need to check the rectifier or voltage regulator if the tach is not working.

Re: Stator Question

Disconnect the yellow wires that come from the stator. Ohm between them. Should be low, maybe even lss than 1 ohm. Then ohm between 1 of them and frame ground. Should be open.

If those tests are good, the problem is in the rectifier/voltage regulator, or the wiring, ie grounding of the rectifier/vr through mounting screws, loose dirty connector, etc.

hope it helps

Re: Stator Question

Thanks for your help Rich and John. I ohmed out the stator and it happened to be ok. As you suggested I traced the wires to the Rectifier/regulators and found shorted wires and burnt out components. Thanks again for your excellent advice I really appreciate it. Bob
