Stator Cleaning (Chyrsler 1975 55HP)

Having problem starting my 55HP Chrysler (1975). Backyard Boat mechanic tested wiring and said not much voltage and looked like needed a stator. Went to boat shop and owner said stator looked okay. He said take apart flywheel and clean all of the parts. Can anyone please tell me what parts I need to clean and can the stator be cleaned? Also the mechanic said the stator magnets could be out of alignment. Could this be the problem and if so how do I correct? Not sure what the exact problem is, but I would appreciate any help. I am new to boating. Thanks!
