starts when outside temp is above 68 degrees

recently purchased a 1974 johnson 50 horse powershift 2 when outside temp is below 65 degrees engine wont start.. if its warm and sunny [above 65-68 degrees] it starts right up and purrs like a kitty and puts a smile on my 15 yr olds face... i have cleaned the carbs replaced a frayed restater.. it did sit on an old boat for 2 years... also i dont think there is any spark when its cold please help very confused... thanks for all your input

Well first you say you "think" it has no spark. You need to confirm that or you will be going down a bunch of blind alleys.

One of the posssible alleys is cranking speed. If cranking too slow, it won't have spark.

Also, make sure the choke is operating correctly. Manual lever needs to be in automatic position. And the choke solenoid is a two-stage unit. BOTH stages must be activated for a cold start.

when the outside temp is cold i have no spark to either cylinder... when its warm outside i have a great spark.. thank you for your time this is the best help site i have found

Time to test some ignition stuff and find the culprit !!

You certainly have an unusual situation. Cranking speed is the first thing that comes to my mind. Does it have spark with the plugs removed? (cranks faster with plugs out)

Thank You for your time and consideration..... crank seems to be the same with plugs in or out maybe this might help when the flywheel is heated up either with ambient air temp or direct sunlight i.e. flywheel is warm to the touch she fires up and i mean there is no hesitation and runs like she is new ive had it out recently and as long as i keep the flywheel warm she will run even if it does drop in temp.

gonna try and pull the flywheel this weekend, grandpa has a manual i can use. he also said something about the magneto and sliding it over the thickness of a matchbook not sure what that is but so far i have actually enjoyed working on this motor and am surprised at how simple some of the repairs and maintenance has been thanks again for all the info i really appreciate it
