Found this info in the Milwaukee newspaper today.
Would have posted in non-boating technical, but found it too humorous .

Why does your car not start when it's extremely cold?

Cars may not start in the cold because the batteries are not fully charged, according to J.D. Power. You can try the following tactics to help your car start in colder temperatures:
  • Warm up the battery, which you can do by flashing the high beam for 20-30 seconds.
  • Turn on the ignition. If you drive a car with an injector, wait a few seconds for the fuel pump to start working.
  • Remember to pull the lever if your carbureator has no automatic choke.
  • If you car has a manual transmission, before starting the engine, depress the clutch pedal to disengage the frozen transmission from the motor.
  • Try to start your car, which should be turned on no longer than 10-15 seconds, or it can overheat. Attempt to start again after 1 minute passes.
  • If the starter works normally, but the car does not start after three attempts, try depressing the gas pedal.
I'm thinking someone wrote this in 1973.
Your thoughts?

Haha. Who has a manual choke any longer? Tractor at the farm has one, but I ain't driving that on a day like today!

I found this one funny. That could have been worded better. I think the intent was to not crank for more than 10-15 seconds.

I have heard most of those before. I've had to put a pan of charcoal under a car before. :) Just gotta be careful not to get it too hot or a full on carbecue could ensue.

I'm thinking that was written in the 50s
Today most cars have the starter controlled by the BCM

I would like to see the starting instructions for my no-choke Holley Double pumper I ran on my 4x4 back in the late 80s back in Milwaukee

Clutch in, pump twice, crank while fluttering throttle. When it fires, hold RPMs at 1300-1500 for 3-5 minutes. If temp is below zero, a bit more throttle needed when letting the clutch out because the gear case is now full of frozen oil with consistency of tar

I fixed up a 1940 Plymouth in the 1970's.------Many folks today would not be able to start that wonderful flathead six.
