Hello everyone, New to iboats ( by the way excellent site). I was just wondering if it is possible to start my newly acquired outboard motor (1985 Johnson 140 hp v4) without the forward controls? i have order a set and will be here next week but just can't wait to see if it runs. by the way i have checked compression (which were excellent), serviced the motor with new water pump, gearbox oil, thermostats and cleaned the carbs anything else i need to do?

thanks in advance
regards Rory

Yep, the throttle is spring loaded to return to idle. just manually shift by rotating prop as you shift it into neutral.
If you don't have any controls you can manually choke it, if it has the start injector solenoid(choke) turn the red lever 90 degs return it to the original position when the engine fires. Jump the starter solenoid if theres no ignition switch. Choke it to stop the engine, don't rev it up on a hose.
You may need to hold a bit of throttle in it until it warms up a bit. Then it should idle by itself.

Welcome to iboats, you will need battery cables, red (pos) to big post on solenoid, opposite the cable to the starter. black (neg) cable grounded to block. at the solenoid, jump from the battery side to the nearest small post on the solenoid. that activates the starter, as said choke to stop the motor. read Primer Solenoid in TOP SECRET FILE.

Same motor as mine by the sounds of it. Excellent motor and with a little P.M. and some TLC they are a really good and reliable motor.
One thing though. Does it still have the VRO in place ?, has it been upgraded to a newer version ? or changed to premix ??
Just want to make certain you get the correct lubrication before you fire her up.

When you say no spark, do you mean no spark on any cylinder ???
