Starting voltage?

I have a '94 Force 70hp, and my fishfinder has a low voltage alarm that I can set. What is the minimum setting you'd recommend, and/or what is the minimum voltage needed to start this engine? Thanks!

Re: Starting voltage?

I would think that would depend on the condition and reserve capacity of the battery, the solenoid, the starter, and the wiring/connections in the entire circuit.

I personally would set it very conservatively.

Re: Starting voltage?

I have my alarm set at 11.5V which seems to be MORE then enough to start my 55. It is more important to realize that as the battery drains the amount of amperage it can put out is reduced and has a more direct impact on starting ability. This is why so many people recommend a second deep cycle battery for your accessories. Not cheap, but better then being stranded....of course I am guilty of not having two batteries as well.

Minimum voltage needed to start engine with a properly charged battery (9.6 volts, while under cranking load).

Re: Starting voltage?

In response to Silvertip on this post in the electrical section;

Thanks. Until I get my voltmeter installed, I've been using the FF/GPS units Low Voltage alarm as a cheat. I originally set it for 11.4v, but it was going off all the time, and I was still able to start the motor without trouble. Each time I'd say it was still a warm engine, but had been off for between 30 mins - 1 hour. I do have a jumpbox with me until I can feel comfortable knowing where my minimum is. Is this more of an individual boat/engine thing?

Re: Starting voltage?

My response is still the same. You are carrying a jump box and I'd strongly suggest you continue to carry it regardless what setting you use. Your locator will shut off somewhere in the 10.5 - 11 volt range due the low voltage provision built into it. It will also automatically shut down somewhere in the 14.5 volt (overvoltage voltage) range. An unloaded battery may measure 12 volts but when you hit the key it will drop to much lower voltage therefore leaving you with no cranking power.
