thanx for replying to start off but now for the 2 questions.
the boat motor is a 115 evinrude v4

1) the boat will not start period when its cold. i know its bad to use starting fluid to start it but i did a couple time and then it picks up and starts running. once it warms up it will start by itself.

2)when the engine is at full throttle shouldnt the buttery fly plates be all the way horizontal. if so the ones on my boat barely even open like the most is a 1/4 way open. any suggestions..... any help is really appreciated.

so far i changed plugs, gas, wires, could it be the feul filter on side of the motor. it will turn over over and over like its not recieving any fire.

Re: starting problems

Wecome to iboats. The fact that you can get good starts with the starting fluid, tells us it is a fuel-related problem. But instead of using starting fluid, use WD40. I would first run a compression test.
If it is good, the primer bulb would get replaced. Still acting funky, then i would rebuild the fuel pump (it is cheap and easy to do). Finally, if all else fails to cure it, the carbs would be cleaned and re-synched.

I would say the plates should be all the way open. These can be adjusted to see. They are on most engines all the way open at full throttle.

Re: starting problems

Hi Tex - I have the same boat motor as you (but a different car, cause mines a Ford and proud of it! ;) ).

I had similar problems when starting cold, but was advised by Dhadley on this board of a 4 step routine to use when starting these motors. It turned out I was pressing the key in at the wrong time. Once I started using Dhadley's method, I never had a problem again.

Check the following thread and read Dhadley's post.

Evinrude 115 starts hard

Hope this helps.
