Just replaced a 3 year old starting battery because of its age and the fact that even at full charge, it wouldn't turn the engine over fast enough to start it. In fact, it hesitated momentarily like the starter simply had difficulty overcoming the compression stroke, but then would crank the engine, but no where near as fast as it normally does. Checked all the leads found everything tight and in good condition. Same problem still exists with a brand new battery.

Starter motor shot? It is the original 1979 starter motor. Sure would appreciate some help.

Tight connections still build resistance and look good, Charlie. Take them off and clean them.

Thanks for the help JB. Took your advice removed them and cleaned them up. Problem is still there. I'm beginning to think the starter motor is slowly giving up the ghost.

Again, appreciate the help.

Try jumper cables directly to starter. That will tell the tale.

-W

I just had this problem - Even though the cables looked good they must have worn on the inside.

I replaced them with $7.00 cables from autozine, cranked fine from the second i turned the key - with the battery i thought that was dead and my new one!

W,
What a super (and simple) check. I must be getting old!
Thanks Again
C

Mnemonic,

Thanks much. I used W's test and darn if the motor didn't turned right over like it was new. Then I followed your advice, and bought a set of cables worked like a charm. I owe both of you guys.......
Best wishes
C
