Hi there,

I have been on this forum before but didnt manage to fix my problem, what with being away this is the first time I have managed to have another look at it.

When I go to start my motor nothing happens when you turn the key, you can hear the choke engage when you press the key in but nothing else. I have replaced the solenoid and solenoid fuse. I can jump the motor using straight from the starter. Also checked battery connections and output DC on the battery.

Just curious as to other things that I can try.

Cheers

It could be the key switch, or the starter solenoid or a bad connection somewhere in between those two items. Id start by getting a meter and check the voltage on the small terminals on the starter solenoid.

With the key turned to the start position, you should see 12 volts across the small terminals. if not start tracking down why.

Im not familiar with your particular boat, but it could also be a safety cutoff inside the controls that prevents starting when the shifter is engaged.

I checked the voltage on the small terminals on the soleniod and they seem to be reading ok? will check this again.

Its an old boat, has a pre 1979 johnson 70hp with forward controls. How would I find out about the safety cut off?

to check the controls turn the key into the on position then at the harness plug find the black wire pin & the black& yellow wire pin place your meter on these 2 pins & check for continuity if you get a reading the then your switch inside the control box is faulty , make sure it is in neutral when you do this test , because if it is not in neutral you will get a reading meaning the motor will not start the switch inside the controls has bridged the black wire with the black & yellow

looks like it was a problem with the neutral safety switch, now have the engine starting. Took a good while to get it going after a few months not starting. What is the best way to align up the shift cable as I removed this while trying to sort everything out.

Cheers
