Re: Starting engine first time after transom rebuild

I found a loose connection in the purple wire and tightened it up, and now I am getting 12v at the coil!

Unfortunately, I'm not getting a spark. I am getting 12v on the white/red lead from the module (step 4 in Don's test tree) and when follow the instructions in step 5, I get no spark. That should suggest a bad coil, but when I pulled off the coil and tested it, the primary and secondary coil both tested within spec (primary coil at .7-.8 Ohms and secondary coil at 9,760 Ohms). That suggests the coil is OK, yes?

If that's the case, then it sounds like the ignition module is the next likely suspect, yes? If that's the case, I'm back to wondering about the black wires mentioned in post #19 above. I'm wondering if they're supposed to be connected. I'm very tempted to try, but I don't want to fry anything...

Anyone have ideas? Or should I just order a new ignition module...

Thanks
Jim

My biggest problem is not being able to see what you are seeing, including the wiring diagram, what manual it's in or anything else.

if there are two ground wires coming out of the module, then they each need to be hooked to to a good ground, not just each other.

OK, Don, let's see if these pictures help...

This first picture (below) shows the wires coming out of the ignition control module. (not pictured are the wht/red and white/green wires that go into the distributor):

The next picture is a bit of wider shot, showing the wires coming out of the ignition control module and then curving around and connecting to the wiring harness via bullet conntectors. (The bullet connectors are at the right hand side of the image, right under the throttle cable (the heavy black cable on the right that's a bit out of focus).

Finally, below is a close up of the bullet connectors between the ignition control module and the harness, showing the black connector that is unplugged. This is the connector I'm not sure about.

Does that help? Is there any other view that would also be useful?

Thanks,
Jim

That ground wire must be hooked up. To test it, hook a jumper to it and to a "GOOD" ground and see if it works.

In your last picture, what color is the wire under your thumb?

It works! It works! I have a good strong spark! Woo hoo!

Thanks, Don, for walking me through this. I learned a lot. Tomorrow I pull it into the drive and see how it runs on muffs.

Thanks again,

Jim

The wire under my thumb (with the red arrow pointing to the empty bullet connector) is black. I tested it for continuity to ground (one lead of my meter on the neg terminal of the battery, the other to that empty bullet connector, and it beeped, so I know that lead was a good ground.

Re: Starting engine first time after transom rebuild

Got the boat out in the driveway today and, for the first time since the engine was pulled last Fall, I fired it up and it ran! What a sweet sound after it has sat on a stand in the garage all winter while the transom and deck were rebuilt.

Thanks to Don, Bond-o, achris and everyone else who's helped me get this thing figured out! I couldn't have done it without your generous help!

Thank you!
