Hey all, I am really new at boating but I am an old hand with motors. I know I am not supposed to start an outboard dry and I read some feedback that you can start one with a hose. So my question is what are muff's, is it some kind of attachment to the water inports on the motor so you can use a hose to run water through the motor while starting on land? Appreciate your time in advance. Denny

Re: Starting an outboard with a hose,

Muffs or ears have a hose fitting that allows you to run fresh water to the water intake holes on the lower unit so you can run the motor and check the water pump on land. Some hints that I've read here on this furum include: Let the water run to the pump for @ least 30sec before starting the motor. Do NOT run the motor at high RPM with the muffs attached. The water should start flowing out of the pee-hole after 20-30 secs. Hope this helps, enjoy your boat.

Re: Starting an outboard with a hose,

I don't mess around with the muffs. I just stick the leg in a big plastic storage container that is filled with water and has the hose running in it. It helps keep the noise down as well as operates much you would be on a lake..

Thanks rogerwa, I appreciate your idea. It sounds logical and more safe to do it this way. As always appreciate your time.

Thanks for your answer Just Joshin, Appreciate you time and help I think I will just get a big container and try it that way. I guess according to rogerwa, it's safer on the water pump. Thanks again!

Re: Starting an outboard with a hose,

just make sure that the water line goes over the intakes and that the water temp does get too warm. With mine it is no problem, but you should keep an eye on it.

Re: Starting an outboard with a hose,

Well-put. But needed to add that running an outboard without water will ruin the impeller in 30seconds sometimes.
I also use the garbage can with a hose attached to a thru-hull fitting on the bottom. This way, it can be drained easily, by just letting the hose lay on the ground. When you want to fill it,just put the hose inside the garbage can, and fill it.

I just use a big plastic recycling container that holds pop cans when not in use on the OB. This way my wife doesn't cranky about the extra stuff layin around..

He He He, ya I understand just what you mean. I also looked at my big plastic garbage can and I don't think it's quite round enough. I imagine that the water in the bucket get's going pretty good around and up and down. I am looking for a larger container now. Thanks again, have a good day. Denny

Yea Denny, don't put the motor in gear in the rubbermaid/trash can, or you will have a big mess.

It should idle fine in it, and not slosh the water out. Remember that your pee hole will be shooting water somewhere too.
