starting an old evinrude

i have a 1972 50hp evinrude im having trouble everytime i goto the boat ramp i need to pour a small amount of fuel down each carb's before the engine will start once i pour the fuel down the carb's the engines runs flawlessly i often start the engine at the boat ramp and turn it off there after a 4 hour non stop fishing trip so the engine is ran for 4 hours without any problem just the hard starting when cold i have also cleaned the carb's does anyone know what might be the problem?

Sounds like the choke is not closing all the way, This is posted as a sticky for all

There is also some additional info on a factory tech sheet that changed the wiring to the choke, can't find it right now but it had to do with purple wires and disconnecting some wire to the choke if i remember.

Are you using an inline primer?

i only have the fuel line primer no aftermarket primer installed

Have you looked at the choke plate to verify it is actually closeing tightly when the choke switch is activated?
