So this past weekend (Aug 7) i picked up a 74 Starcraft Holiday 18 off craigslist. A little worn with typical repairs needed (decking, wiring, paint) but she's solid, no leaking seams and good transom. i'll post more in a bit, gotta trim my photos to fit here.

Can't wait to see photos. When I was a kid, that was our family boat. Same year and everything. I remember it fondly, with the Mercury tower-of-power on the back making the glorious noise that they did.

Yeah, I'm not new to boat restorations. But my forte WAS fiberglass. A few PenYanns and a Lowes Delux and some off brand. But I have done alumininamum (heh) I felt bad when I went to get the boat. It was a 2 1/2 hour trip to Longview Tx. I tried to haggle the guy down from $500 because he said it was a 15 footer. Nope. An 18footer. And he loaded me down with so many spare parts! 3 complete throttle units with cables. 1 lower end and 1 complete outboard drive still mounted on the remains of a fiberglass transom (both have the hydraulic lifters and lines intact). two anchors. A complete dash with steering. and 3 boxes of misc parts (including two disassembled carbs). So far what I know it this:

- The decks need replacing (of course)
-needs new paint
-needs new seats
-needs new engine cover
-needs new battery
-needs new stern light
-needs to have some woodwork done/replaced/fab-ed
Oh and the lifter hyd tank has a leak.
and maybe some rewiring.

Trailer needs new lights
and needs the crank replaced (Oh yeah, included a complete post with that on it also)
and for good measure 2 life vests

I'll know how much work the engine needs when I get the battery. He says it was running when he bought it and he never did any work on it. So it's like I'm buying it from the previous owner.

But all in all I think $500 I ended up on the better end of the deal
Oh yeah, the trailer spare is blown out. Looks brand new but he said it blew in the heat. I believe it.

So first going to pick up the battery this weekend and the lights for the trailer. If I get the motor running ok I'ma take it to the lake for a test drop and check for leaks. A pretty good look over the outside showed no loose ones but a dunk will know for sure.

My intent is not to get a faithful restoration but more a functional but pretty runabout. I plan on replacing a lot of the vinyl covered boards with stained wood. Especially the strip down the front from the windshield door and the center of the rear deck over the motor. And when I rebuild the engine box I'm going to build a stash deck kinda like on the old dodge van engine covers. I can build new seats but I might just opt for new swivel seats for ease.
Oh that reminds me, also needs a battery box. But I'll also rebuild the back seats too. Still debating on which way to have the engine cover tilt though. But after doing my first wet test the next thing is to source out my local parts/material suppliers. Specifically I need to try to find some marine grade plywood for the decks. Any suggestions for wood for the trim. Arm rests, the bow center strip, the dash top and the rear transom deck? And I may be new to aluminums but I already KNOW.....NO TREATED WOOD!

But, Oh yes, Title in hand! Even has tags for this year. Oh another thing brings up a question. I also got with it two props. One is still on the complete outdrive. The other was I think supposed to be for the 3rd lower end unit. But it's stainless steel. Any issue using that on an aluminum boat? Want to keep any aluminum corrosion to a minimum.

On a side note, yeah, since I was expecting to pick up a 15 footer I took the wife's Baby Blazer. Um, the ride home was a little slow. But my truck had a nail in the tire I picked up the day before

Brings back memories for me. Very similar to what we had, other than yours being a sterndrive. Oh, and ours was only a couple years old at the time, so no work required. :D

That starter was one I had sitting around to test the batt. It's dead.

I'm also thinking at one time there was a fishing rig setup on the back. The plates are still mounted to the gunwall tops. and there are two old holes from something. Not sure what I'm gonna do with those yet.

Right now I'm in learn mode. I'm reading all I can find that pertains to my boat/motor. Finally found my merc's serial number (under a nice layer of grime) and id'd the 3 out drives I have (all mc-1's) and am taking pondering the plan of attack of my birds nest of wiring. I can tell it's not original but it could have been done neater. That's going to be my first meaty fix when I get the new battery this weekend. I'm still trying to find where to get a manual for my motor. And saturday I'm gonna troll the local marina's (Lake Texoma) and source out good used parts dealers and the such. Grandpappy point is my first target. But I've only been doing online digging for 3 days and I'm finding so much on here that is gonna help. You guys rock. I'm not dreading but apprehensive if I have to rebuild the carb. Not the first time for me, just hate to do it. And hoping that's the worst of my engine overhaul. Other than wiring it mostly looks solid even if it looks original (serial no 3886012, yep it's old) But I'm stoked, while looking over the spare outdrive still on the cut transome I found a hanger hook. Now to get it off and in my boat. Let y'all know how the new battery hook up works and how hard it is to (or if it will even) start.

Alpha One Gen 1s are a dime a dozen around the US of donor boats and has a very similar transom hole setup You can try to make the existing setup work but you might be better off fire selling that very old gear and putting something with still widespread parts support.

If that's the inline 4 GM 181cid engine you have, I believe the block is from 1974 to 1989 is the same. So you might be able to take a Alpha One Gen 1 3.0L donor boat with all the outdrive hardware and exchange your motor in place if theirs is worse than yours.

The engine head might cause some complications though depending on what exists. Not sure of the details of the engine head variations through that 1974 to 1989 of the 2.5L and 3.0L heads.

Anyways, it's your project and you'll have to weigh these costs/benefits of keeping that old of an outdrive system versus updating it to newer.

All depends. Because (and I'm taking this with a grain of salt until I really dig into the lower end) that the lower end on the boat is original but both the spares were recently rebuilt. The motor itself doesn't look bad but I notice that someone disassembled the original fuel pump and added an inline electric, which is the one thing my nearly dead battery did work. I'll have a better opinion tomorrow. But thanks for that. Even if I do keep this original going (once I DO get it going) it's an option for later. Wanna get it functional. Then pretty. THEN maybe upgrades.

Oh, and yes it's the inline 4 GM.

Well day 1 of repairs was verry telling. Now I see why there were so many parts thrown in with it. I'm gonna need to pick through them and piece mine together. The hydraulic lifters were frozen and the port lifter was cracked at the motor. The throttle on it is messed up. Was gonna replace it with a Morse shifter in the pile. Fortunately the wood stringers under the bow cap are still solid. But the dash top panel and the instrument panel are kissed. But OH MY GOD the rats nest of wires I had to pull out. I'm not sure exactly what was in it but I can see the remnants of a depth finder, an air horn, a spotlight and some other unknown plugs. But the dash wiring was ALL messed up. Coulda been the fact the ignition switch (not original) was toast. But the lights are all jerry rigged. New batt I was able to use a remote switch to jumper the starter all the way to the ignition switch. All wiring connections good and motor not seized. Bought a new ignition switch at Oriellys (same as the one I took out) wired it in and it turned over. Also I can hear the inline fuel pump going. So that's good too. But in digging in under the dash I've decided to start the wood work now. I've found a good supply of cedar I'm gonna use. Not sure how I'll do the bow though. I can't find a single piece wide enough to cover that center strip that WAS at some point covered with that vinyl. When I took off the dash I saw the remnants under it. It is still intact in the gunwals. But tomorrow I go through and rewire the lights and shorten that rats nest. Maybe get it to start. Need to find a barrel to put water in.

So been tinkering the past week. Working on sorting the rats nest of wiring out. Almost got it. Need to fix one connection. But the tach is not wired so might have to fixe that. I tore off the top dash and instrument cluster piece to get started. Got a new piece cut formed and stained for both. They are now in place. Still need to get a couple of the fasteners tight. Gonna get those details finished tomorrow (08/22) since it's getting a little warm. But Oh My God I forgot how much I hated old plastic. I know I'm not gonna stay original. But really liked the Starcraft centercap on the steering wheel. Well trying to get that off, to get the steering wheel off, was not nice. broke 3 of the 4 prongs off with no effort. GRRRR! The dash turned out a little darker than I expected. Thought the stain was going to be closer in color to the plastic cover on the dash face. Oh well. I AM going to try to save the Holiday 18 sticker on the dash though. Transfer it when I get that piece redone. That'll be later. Once I get the dash put back together and the wiring squared away, then it's engine testing time. One thing is I need to find a barrel to dip the lower end in for water.

Oh, man it's a good thing I love a meaty project. I mean if it werent for the fact that so many parts were included in the deal I might be pissed. I mean, The guy I bought the boat from never got around to doing any work on it. He only had it maybe 8 months. But the PO really wore this thing out. It's a good thing the spare lower end is rebuilt because the lower end on the boat is beat. I took a close look at it while trying to figure out water supply during repairs. The tail of the lower end was broken and welded back together and painted over. But the weld wasn't very good. And there is another broken off chunk on the port side. And I still need to swap the lifters. So guess after I finish rewiring the power to the lights tomorrow that's next on my agenda, just drop THAT bottom end off and hook a water line straight up to the inlet hose in the drive unit. Oh and when I DID have power to the lights (read: rats nest) I found the front light worked but they just wired in a car light socket, which was lopsided and started to melt the inside of my red lense. So ANOTHER thing to replace. I was going to Atwoods Monday to get a new tail light, now I will need a new bow light also. But question? They didn't have ASTROTURF carpeting on these things? Did they? There was still a piece under the light and a bit is evident under the bow cap tip. I'm glad I decided to run wood down the center of the bow cap from the windshield door up. So many screw holes.
