I just picked up a 3 hp Evinrude 2cy
It had about 2 hours time on it. It was stored
for awhile but dealer preped for storage.
It runs well. One problem I have is starting
warmed up motor. When motor is shut down after
running and warming up I must pull choke out
all the way and pull once. Then I set choke out quarter way and pull once or twice to start
motor. should't the motor start right up when
warm without touching choke? This happens immediately after shuting down motor. I am new
to outboards so advise would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Alan

Alan,
Welcome to the forum!

You didn't mention the year of your motor or how long it has been in storage. A guess would be a problem in the low speed idle circuit being partially clogged and or a mixture screw out of adjustment. A carb cleaning and a check of the mixture settings are next. Be sure of the fuel/oil mix and that the motor is does not overheat (old water pump impeller).

Re: Starting 3hp Evinrude

Hi alan
Some motors require more choke than others. All motors may need some choke when warm. This depends on where the pistons come to rest when stoped. My guess is that you are not setting the throtle control to the start position. The main funtion for the start position is this sets the timing for the easiest start. This needs to be done hot or cold. It is true of course that we get away with not doing this step on a warm motor quite often.

ke4dc,

That engine should start very easily. You should be able to think it started. ;) Just kidding.

If it is an older model-mid sixties. It probably still has the cork float. Those were troublesome and would lead to flooding. Believe it or not, that engine needs choke when flooding.

DJ is right these little engines will start with a dirty look. Does this engine have two needle valve's? If so the top one is slow speed, bottom, high speed. Both have to be in proper adjustment. There is a ceramic type filter that screws into tank outlet. These sometimes get gummed up.Here is why we need model numbers when posting. OMC made these engines for years, but they did make minor changes. Later models had a fixed highspeed jet.

Re: Starting 3hp Evinrude

There seems to be some confusion here:
I just picked up a 3 hp Evinrude 2cy
It had about 2 hours time on it.
If that's a '60s or '50s 3hp, I'll be shocked!

Please, ke4dc, can you tell us the year and model number?
