Hello all, I have a 2010 Mercury outboard 40HP 3 cylinder! My question is my starter went out and I bought a replacement which I received today! Before I remove old starter is there anything I should know? Also I noticed my new starter came with a rubber top which covers spring,nut,etc..couldn't pull it off,Shall I use more force or cut dang thing off? I don't want to damage spring?Any input or suggestions would be appreciated.thanks for your time

If it still doesn't start have your fully charged battery checked for 11v min at the terminals under a 200 amp load, then clean and retighten all your connections from the battery through the high current lines, and finally, check your starting solenoid which may energize (click when powered) but may not carry the necessary current to spin the starter (10v across starter while spinning with plugs in place) adequately to start the engine.

But you probably went through all that before you decided on the starter as the culprit and plunked down the cash.
