Starter won't quit with key off!!!

Hey guys this is new to me so bear with me. I was doing some work to my boat the other day and something strange happened. When I turned the key the engine tried to crank normally but when I stopped turning the key the starter kept going. I panicked and ran back and pulled the cable off of the battery. Now every time I touch the cable to the battery post the engine starts turning. I put on a new starter already and still get the same thing. Its a 2000 model 5.7 GSi . Any suggestions?

there must be a short some where that is causing the yellow and red cable to get power, I dont know if your model of engine is fitted with diodes if it is maybe one of the diodes has gone bad this happened to me last year.

Any idea where the yellow and red cable runs so I can check for a short. Also where would said diodes be located if the engine is fitted with them?

What is the full model number of your engine, or even the serial number. Year only gets close.
You don't have diodes in your EFI system, only carbed engines used diodes and then only to control the fuel pump operation.

Volvo Penta 5.7 GSi PEFS
There are 2 numbers on the engine tag 4012030298 and 3869059
Hull is a 2001 Monterey Montura 21.8

5.7 GSi PEFS Tells me everything about the engine that could be needed.

What was you doing? It may have something to do with what happened.

I changed the batteries and the fuel filter.

Ok, time to start eliminating.

Disconnect the round 10 pin connector on your engine. That will tell us if it's the engine side or helm side of the electrical system.

might be the solenoid sticking, rap on the starter solenoid while its cranking, if that makes it disengage, replace the solenoid.
