I have a 1974 evinrude 70hp motor and when I turn the key the starter will not catch with the flywheel and i hear a pop and it sounds like its coming from the top spark plug or wire. I checked the plugs they look good and compression test was good as well. any suggestions?

Does the starter turn when hit the key? Check your battery connections at the starter/solenoid and the ground. The pop you are hearing might just be a battery arc from a loose connection.

Given it's age, corrosion is a big issue. Pull the engine cover and look at the starter while someone else turns the key, what happens ? I would momentarily apply 12v directly to the starter terminal and see what happens, if the starter turns then back up from there. Keeps us posted.

Does the starter bendix gear engage with the flywheel or does it just sit there and spin ?? Depending on the starter mtr you have you could also have the battery hooked up backwards.

If you had the battery cables bassakwards, Time to check the rectifier to see if it's blown.
