I have a 1981 johnson 35hp electric start. Start will not kick in. Have rebuilt starter, new soleniod, battery good, have power into soleniod but nothing coming out. Ingnition fuse good. Engine runs by pull starting. What am I missing?

Re: Starter to engage

When you say you have power INTO the solenoid you don't mention from which side! power from the battery to the solenoid is just one side of the system. Check for power from the ignition switch in the START position on the small terminal on the solenoid. No power there the solenoid won't energize. Could be a bad switch or a break in the wire. You test the solenoid by jumping it with a short piece of wire.

Thanks Silvertip. Does the yellow ignition wire go to the same side (small terml) as the battery in side (large pole)of the soleniod? FYI, have replaced the ingition swith. Also, when you say jump the soleniod, you mean run jumper wire directly from battery to starter? will that harm starter?
