Starter Solenoid for 7.4L

You need part number 50-863007A1 and if you look for the PMGR (permeate magnet) type and you will really like the way it spins the motor. The PMGR cost a bit more then regular and they are also lighter/smaller

The solenoid which is part of the starter is NLA from Merc. Now if you have the 12 inch starter you can search on part number 89-18080 and can still be found. If you have the 8 inch starter then there is no part number to search on that I can find

Look for the local starter rebuild company. They wil have what you need on the shelf

Appreciate the info. I am assuming a solenoid. I get a loud single click when I hit the ignition switch and no turn over. I am going to first check my battery voltage, although it is a new battery this year. Pull all battery cables and solenoid electrical connections and clean them. I understand there are 2 solenoids, one on the starter and one mounted on the exhaust riser? Is there an easy way to narrow down what solenoid or if it is the starter?

A "loud click" coming from the starter motor can be a bad solenoid not making contact or hydro-lock
Go to the slave on front of the manifold and short the 2 large lugs, do you get the same sound or does the motor turn over

I finally got back to the boat to give this a try. I get the same click when I short the two lugs on the solenoid.

Time to pull the plugs. Did this clunk just happen or were you experiancing hard starting prior? Any overheats? Exaust manifolds /risers replaced when?
Its been 20 days so I hope you dont boat in salt/brackish waters because if it was a hydrolock the rings are shot by now

It did it last season a few times and I discovered a bad cell on the battery so I replaced it this season and it has done it a couple times after that and now won't turn it all. It has never overheated and runs perfect when it is started. It is fresh water, not salt.

Mine did the same with the clunk and no crank, It's the solenoid. I removed mine hoping to disassemble it and clean the large copper contacts but I found it is a sealed unit and unservicable. I twisted the pole on the solenoid a few times and tested it and mine works again but a new solenoid is in order.

Was yours the starter solenoid or the slave solenoid?

Thanks for all the responses. I took the day off and went to the boat, pulled the starter off and took to a local parts store and had the starter tested. They said the solenoid was bad and had one in stock for $20 and even put it on for me and tested it again at no charge. Back up and running and what a gorgeous day it was here in Ohio on Lake Erie!
