Help!
I replaced the starter leads on my 1953 Force 50 as they were badly corroded and I had to take one plug out in order to sart the engine. I noted the order of the various wires attached to the starter relay and thought I had reconnected everything right. But, fully charged battery and not a peep from the starter. I have the Force workshop manual but the wiring of the relay is confusing as the red/yellow seems to go to a different stud, and it's a job to know which way round you are looking at the diagram. Can anyone offer any advice?
Thanks
Barry

Re: Starter relay wiring

The two big lugs on the starter relay should go to the starter and one to the positive side of the battery. You can reverse the order of these wires and it wont matter. The smaller wire goes to the neutral interlock switch. That switch has to be engaged in order for the starter relay to be energized to start the motor. If you have a dvm set it to DC volts and measure the voltage from the small lug on the starter relay to ground. It should be 12 volts when you are trying to start. If not check to see if the neutral interlock switch is working.

Re: Starter relay wiring

Hi Eurolarva!
Thanks, belatedly, for your reply to my query re starter relay.I have had the relay tested and it is defunct so I have got a new one.My local outboard centre says there is only one correct way to wire up the relay,,but as it looks the same either way round I don't see this.So + from battery to one big lug, cable from starter motor to other one. There is a yellow/red which goes to one small terminal, and a thin black which goes to other small one. Is this right so far? Then there is a double red which I reckon goes to the same big lug as battery +. This one goes to a fuse.If this sounds ok I would be grateful for your response.
Thanks

Re: Starter relay wiring

older starter relays only had 3 connections plus a body ground. My guess is your small black wire is your ground. The small yellow/red wire goes from the neutral interlock switch to the small connector on the starter relay. Then one big one goes to the big starter motor lug ( This would be the lug towards the rear of the motor) and the last big lug on the relay is connected to the positive battery wire and the circuit breaker.

Does yours kind of look like this?
In this photo is a way to test it to see if it works with a 6 amp battery charger and an ohm meter.
