Hi
I got a real strange problem on my Johnson 175 faststrike v6 -93.
The problem is that my starter relay does not kick my starter engin (i guess)
When the engin is cold it almost start without any problem.
But if i run the boat and after a while stop and turn of the engin it would not start again, i just get a click from the starter relay (i guess its a starter relay in that little black box)
Sometimes when i turn of and than direct start it, most of the times it do start and then i can get it start even after 10-15 min... seems like it needs that extra kick after i had put the gear out.
but if i run it on gear and then shut it down and let it be... then i get only clicks from that black box when i try to start it after about 5-10 min.
If i put a cable to bypass the relay then i have no problem to get the engin run.

Sorry for my spelling...

Thanks from Sweden.

Daniel, the starter solenoid (relay) may be bad, but first check the power wiring for clean tight connections from the starter to the battery. Check both the positive and negative including the engine ground wire from the battery. A lot of good starters and solenoids are replaced when the problem is a bad connection.

Sounds like your starter motor is good, since bypassing the solenoid with a jumper gets starts. It's either the connections or the solenoid. Good luck.

Re: starter relay prob. johnson 175

Thank you WildOne.

I guees it's the selenoid, cause i wire a cable short cable from the input of the selenoid to the output of it, and then it start without prob.
So i think the connections are good cause i use the same cable that goes to the selenoid (if you see what i mean)
But the strange thing is that it work and start if i try to start with the key direckt after i shut the engin down... but if i wait some min. after i shut it down... no way i can get it start (just click) then i have to use "the wire starter kit"
Could it have something to do with heat???
Well i better get a new solenoid i guess.
Once again
Thanks from sweden for the quick answer.

I would try cleaning all of the power connections first. Go from the battery to the starter, both + and -. If still no improvement, install a new solenoid. I usually try the cheap or free fixes first before replacing any parts. It still may end up being the solenoid, but you'll at least be pretty sure. The intermittant nature of the problem is typical of a bad connection somewhere (which may be in the solenoid or external).

A jumper across the + terminals on the solenoid which always starts your motor can be either a) a bad solenoid OR b) one or two loose or dirty connections.
