Starter Problem-Solved on the water

Last Sunday we were out on Mobile Bay fishing. No fish so we tried to start up my 85 HP Force, and there was the ugliest noise. Popped the cover and the starter bendix was jambed into the flywheel. The nut, retainer and spring were GONE.... We did find them all in different spots in the housing.
After putting parts back on, we were fine.

1. Always have some tools with you. Channel locks, multi tipped screwdriver,
small vise grips,an adjustable wrench, long pliers or long magnet.
2. Remove engine cover in down position. If I have removed it in the up position, all the parts would be in the bay.
3. Don't panic. We took the time to look hard for the parts and found them.

Another thing for the checklists.

Good luck all,

Mike

Even if you lost the parts, that engine can be rope started. If it is running properly, it will start first pull. They are really quite easy to pull over. Try it sometime.

Frank,

I did try it once before. Just about pulled my arm out of the socket.
Mine seems quite hard to pull start. Maybe the wrong size rope.

That was my last resort if the parts were lost.

Thanks,

Mike

Use something like a lawn mower pull cord--thin and strong. It is a lot easier when you have a handle and use both hands. Brace your foot on the splash well and give a firm yank. Just be sure no one is close enough behind you to get snapped by the rope.

Frank,

I will certianly give it a try.
It would be ugly to smack someone with your arm or the rope. BLOOD>

Come to think of it, when I tried it, I had accidently pulled the emergency cord off the switch and had run the battery down, thus, it was NEVER going to start. I know no one else had ever done that one. I got it going by using jumper cables that I carry from the trolling battery.

So, with all correct, it should be easier.

Thanks,

Mike
