In my yard sits a Boston Wahler with a Johnson V4 90HP and good batteries. When I try to start the engine, the starter motor cranks but it is without much enthusiasm. The batteries are good and fully charged. The first cycle of the starter motor sounds like the battery is almost dead, than it does a few fast revolutions to continue like the battery is alsmost dead. All the time I keep the key turned. I replaced the starter motor to no avail. Does anyone have any idea??

Thanks, Ray

Pull the plugs and see if it cranks fast.

Check for at least 12 Volts at the starter selonoid wire(Big one From Battery). If it is, jump out selonoid from large terminal to small+ terminal and see what happens. Could be another bad starter or the wire from the battery is shot or corroded on either end. Check all connections. When starting, Volts at the starter should not fall below 9 Volts.

My 90 HP Evinrude 1985 does the same exact thing when I am using a deep cycle battery. When I put my truck battery in it it cranks fine.

I had the same issue on my 40hp evinrude and it turned out that the brushes in my starter were so worn that they were barely touching the core in the starter. I bought a replacement brush set for about 20 bucks, installed them, and it fired right up.
