Are you suppose to use smaller bolts in length. Starter is about 1/2 inch from snugging up when bolts are tight???? Any suggestions??? 4.3 omc cobra

there are a lot of different aftermarket starters for these engines and the bolts MUST match the starter, if they are too long they will allow the starter to shift and can break off causing a major problem. Make sure that the bolts will bottom out on the starter mount before they bottom out in the block threads. Here's a pic of the new ARCO permanent magnet gear reduction starter I installed last year with the ARCO bolts. You can see how much smaller it is than the old Delco unit.

Looks exactly like the one I pulled off mine. What size bolts did u have to get for new one?

if you changed from a direct drive starter to a PMGR, you need new bolts

Do you know what size they are or where to get them. Tried few different gm starter bolts and none of them have been right .

If the mounting flanges on the new starter are thinner, you may have to cut the bolts off. I suggest running a die down on the bolt first, if you don't have a correct sized die, at least run a nut down on it. Then cut it off as smoothly as possible, and spin the die or nut back off, this helps clean up the threads.

The bolts I got are sold by ARCO as an installation kit. Look on their website for a part #. But you may have a different starter and you must verify that the bolts will clamp the starter to the block before they bottom out in the block.
Thread the outer bolt in the block all the way and measure from the block to the edge of the bolt that clamps against the starter. Then measure the height of the mounting pad of the starter. The measurement of the bolt should be less than the mounting pad of the starter with the bolt threaded all the way into the block. That way you know for sure those bolts will hold the starter tightly.

Are you using the original bolts. Are they metric or fractional. I am just curious as these engines could have either one. Which ever way you go you need about 3/4” of thread showing from the mounting surface on the starter.
