I have a 1991 225 evinrude and tonight on the lift i went to start it and the starter popped up but made a awful grinding sound and turned the flywheel a little but is not grinding on the flywheel itself, i just doesn't seem to kick in .... The battery's good and so are the cables so idk what to think. I was planning on taking it out tomorrow so if its a simple fix that'd be great

Re: Starter grinds

Check the top housing on starter as they like to break....

Re: Starter grinds

As mentioned above.....the starters do break AND normally some light oil is also good to spray (Not WD40) on the starter shaft where the pinion and spring are. Sometimes that gets gummed up and does not permit free movement

Re: Starter grinds

If you remove the battery or disconnect the wires at all than check to make sure that everything is wired up correctly. I made this mistake one spring when I first connected everything back up. The starter made an awful grinding noise from the inside and barely had enough power to engage much less actually turn over the motor. What ended up happening is one of the negative (-) wires had fallen out of view at some point and didn't get connected... Once I hooked it up the starter sprung up with full power and no problems! Make sure that everything that is supposed to be connected to the battery is and that it's correct.
