Starter for old merc 300 problem

I posted before about the need for a starter for this old engine and was given good advice to have it rebuilt. Well I took it to the rebuild shop after the guy said he could fix it but today learned it can not be fixed.....Lordy It needs a new armature and you cant buy it or another starter he says. I knew that parts were rare for this old classic 30 hp mercury and hope someone here might have an idea as to where I might look. I hate to throw this good running engine away just because the starter is broken but I may have no chose.. thanks

It's only 30 horse. You could rope start it till you locate a good used or rebuildable starter. I have rope started my 100 hp.

Yes it has a rope starter. I have never used it but will try,thanks.
