As part of the rebuild of my 5.0GL-C I replaced the starter as it was pretty badly corroded. When I tried removing the wiring from the starter the entire terminal snapped off (see pic below). As you can see in the pic one of the wires was flush to the starter then secured with a generic nut and then the other 2 were secured with another nut. The parts diagram shows that there should be a specific extension or stand-off nut between those wires and that the rubber insulator cap should be secured in place as well. My question is, how important are these specific pieces and can I get away with just using a generic nut like it was previously wired or is that a safety hazard in terms of sparking/arcing in the bilge? If I need the specific nut does anyone know the size/pitch of those threads, and are they stainless or zinc plated steel, or what? Thanks in advance.F66D2D67-EA95-4FBD-B473-4CECD9D98220.jpeg

It appears you broke the solenoid trying to remove the battery cable
take it apart, clean everything crimp on 2 new ring connectors ,yellow/red to the inboard small post, purple to the outermost small post, generic nut that fits the main starter post

Thanks for the quick reply. So any generic nut between the battery cable and the other 2 will suffice? I don’t need that fancy one in the schematic (#6 and 7 in the attached pic)?402012EB-9BA2-4D5F-8FB6-0333F5679619.png

If the threads stop before a nut can bottom out, as illustrated in the picture, you'll need a metal spacer of some sort to ensure good clamping loads on the ring connectors. I think any spacer or washer will do. I would spray the terminal after tightening everything with CorrosionX, Boeshield, or similar product.

Thanks for the help, I did end up needing that stand-off nut to make a secure connection with all 3 wires on the main lug. If anyone else needs the info it’s an M8x1.25 nut, at least on the aftermarket Sierra starter.
