As part of the rebuild of my 5.0GL-C I replaced the starter as it was pretty badly corroded. When I tried removing the wiring from the starter the entire terminal snapped off (see pic below). As you can see in the pic one of the wires was flush to the starter then secured with a generic nut and then the other 2 were secured with another nut. The parts diagram shows that there should be a specific extension or stand-off nut between those wires and that the rubber insulator cap should be secured in place as well. My question is, how important are these specific pieces and can I get away with just using a generic nut like it was previously wired or is that a safety hazard in terms of sparking/arcing in the bilge? If I need the specific nut does anyone know the size/pitch of those threads, and are they stainless or zinc plated steel, or what? Thanks in advance.
