I don't know. You have a broken start switch there. I'd start with that as the source of the problem. <br /><br />I think what I'd do is disconnect your push button switch altogether and replace it. Where is this switch? According to the parts list diagrams, Johnson didn't offer an electric start 25hp engine in 1971, so this must be a conversion.<br /><br />So, replace the switch and all will probably be well. The starter housing should be grounded to the engine block. If you saw a spark, you have a bad ground, but that shouldn't keep the solenoid energized.<br /><br />If you're having problems with the switch, replace the switch. Seems pretty simple to me. Also, check the wiring to the solenoid. You said you replaced it recently. Did you get the wiring messed up?
