Starter crapped out today, I tapped it with a hammer then it worked.

I'm guessing no doubt a bad starter, I was out on the water today, boat wouldn't start, I thought the battery was dead. I tapped it w a hammer and it started. New starter or solenoid? I'm going to be pro-active and get a new starter regardless. Your thoughts

Does anyone have a model # for my engine, I need a starter. It crapped out today. Tapped it with a hammer and it engaged. It's an old starter so I'm thinking of getting a new one. Rebuilt whatever. Thanks

Probably… had a 76 Volkswagen rabbit that had the same issue. Always carried a hammer with me… the bendix finally gave out.. replaced the starter.
others may agree don’t go with an overseas cheapo one. Get the real deal. JMO

for SBC's there are 4 different starters

direct drive vs PMGR
staggered pattern (168 tooth flywheel) vs straight pattern (153 tooth flywheel)

your 1985 originally came with a heavy direct drive starter go with PMGR.

Yep go with the PMGR starter; just make sure the bolts are the right length ones & not too long. I used an ARCO PMGR with their bolts & no problems. Cranks engine over fast and doesn’t draw down the battery as much due to the permanent magnets…

A starter built for a 2.5L or 3.0L between 1965 and 1990 will work. I could give you the numbers off of my starter but I don’t think they mean anything. Pretty sure a PO bought it from DB electrical.

Your motor uses a starter with straight across bolt pattern
Merc number is 8M0090697 but should be able to get after market
