i have had a boat for 2 years and still really new to boating. My engine is a 1990 merccruiser alpha 1 4.3l.The starter is shot but i can only find one of the bolts on the top.I,ve searches up and down for the other and found no empty holes so i must be missing it or its in a place i cant feel. Also is it safe to replace the starter with and auto starter.Ikeep getting different views on that.

Ayuh,...... I don't know What bolt you Found,...
But,...
Chevy starters are attached by 2 bolts, Up thru from the Bottom, near the rear of the starter housing......
Also is it safe to replace the starter with and auto starter.

NO,...... Absolutely NOT......

As Bondo says, "No" on the automobile starter - it is a safety consideration - both yourself and others. There is an explosion factor that comes into play when using automobile electrical parts - starter, alternator, etc.

Those who are giving you "different views" - you might not want to be asking them any more boat questions. ;)

By the way, welcome to the forum! You've come to the right spot for answers.

Even stranger when one has a service manual specific ones engine and drive. Lots of questions get answered in those books and lots of costly mistakes are avoided (if it is actually read that is)..
