Did you take it apart and clean the slide and hole where the slide goes?
Out of adjustment. even a little can stop it from working.

You talking about the mechanics of the choke itself?

No, because when I run 12v to it directly from the solenoid it functions just fine, so it appears to be an electrical issue not a mechanical one.

That's the first thing that should have been done SOP
We can't help if you don't follow the suggestions??
I've worked on hundreds of these things and the first thing I would do is clean the slide and choke.

I'm sorry I didn't recall that getting suggested to me earlier; I've tried to follow every suggestion in this thread and post the results.

I'm grateful for the assistance and not trying to be "one of those guys"

Like I said, I didn't think there was anything wrong with the actual assembly for two reasons - first when I send 12v direct to the solenoid the choke works fine; second, with the starter issues it certainly appeared to be an electrical issue not a mechanical one.

To set-up the choke-solenoid around plunger;
1 - Loosen clamp that holds solenoid
2 - Close choke-assembly (plunger will go down)
3 - While choke-plates in cabs are closed & held in place!! slightly push the solenoid up so that the plunger bottoms out
4- Tighten clamp
(Don't forget to clean/lubricate the plunger)

That worked for mine also it's now fixed. It was weird but on mine if that thing isn't just right in that sleeve it wouldn't do anything.

UPDATE- Choke is fixed. I had a bad ground which I found underneath the console. Put a bus bar in for the + and - which cleaned up my wiring a decent amount.

Starter still crap, but I figured out why. The electrical post that the + cable mounts to is super loose internally. It's obviously not getting power. Tried my old starter, and it spun beautifully, however will not engage the flywheel because I can tell visually that the bendix (isn't that the post that the gear spins on?) is slightly bent which prevents the gear from popping up to engage.

Gonna order another starter and will post when I get it installed. Ordered a name brand one not Chinese garbage.

Thanks again all.

The shaft or armature bends from excessive use.
Also if the bottom mounting bracket is missing it leads to bent a shaft.
A tiny bit of oil or thin grease on the worm gear after cleaning might help don't get too much on it or the rubber in the bendix slips and is useless..
These starters are easy to rebuild and make sure the parts are together right.
The kits(get Mercury) are fairly cheap.

I do not have the bottom bracket so the bent shaft seems to make sense. Shoot I didn't even realize their was a bottom bracket till I looked on some other site and saw a picture of it.

Anyway new starter gets here today so will update when I get it installed.

IT WORKS!

New Sierra starter showed up today and it fired right up.

Moral of the story - it just MIGHT actually be the starter and don't buy cheap Chinese starters from Amazon.

Thank you all again.
