My Mercury 50hp will not start. It has charge, when I turn to start it the starter will go around on the top but does not go up and engage motor above it. What can I do? I'm just a basics type of person, so I may have described the problem in very simple terms. It was new last year and this is the first time I tried to use it this year? Is it a starter issue? Selenoid Problem?

Is the starter turning fast enough? If it is clean and lightly lube the shaft the bendix rides up and down on. If working properly you can manually turn it up and when let go it will drop back down. There should be no resistance while doing that. Make sure all your connections are very clean and tight.

Just a thought: Make sure your battery cables aren't reversed. I did this once and sat scratching my head for like fifteen minutes. Took a peek at the battery and was like !@#$%^&!!! A very easy way to smoke ignition components too. Hope this helps.

Sounds like the bendix is stuck. Mine once did that and after I cleaned and lubed it with some light oil, it worked like a champ.
