Hi, I'm new to the form. I just bought a 1971 14' Starcraft boat with a 1968 40 HP Evinrude outboard. The boat is in very good condition, the one problem I'm having is the cable for the steering came off the steering spool. I re-wound the cable on the steering wheel spool only to have it come off again. It keeps coming off after only a few turns of the boat. How can I fix the problem. Thank you,
Marvin

Re: Starcraft steering cable problem

I'm going to suggest that the cable has stretched over it's life and has to be retensioned (or replaced). Take a serious look at it, especially at the pressure points (pullys / attachment points) for any wear or fraying, if you see any don't bother with adjustiing anything and just replace it. Being a 1971 I'd say most of the good was gotten from it. ;)

Thanks for all the help everyone. I did check all cables and pulleys, everything looks fine no chips cracks frays ect. Part of the problem was not knowing how to rewind the cables. Thanks to you guys I now have directions and will rewind it this weekend. One more question once rewound how do I set the spring tension?

Loosen one of the cable clamps and pull.

Re: Starcraft steering cable problem

Found out the actual cause of the cable coming off was because the steering column had rotated several degrees and was causing the cable to wind out and pop off as I turned the wheel. Can someone tell me how to tighten the steering column so it strays in place?
