For as long as I've been loving the outdoors I have swore that I would never get a camper. Never, ever, ever, never, never, ever, ever buy a camper!

So last week I took the family for just a one nighter up to East Tawas Point on Lake Huron, we tented it.

We met up with some friends of ours and they had a little popup camper. Well, Jennifer thought it was really "cute". And, she really, really, really, wanted one!

After several "conversations" with my beautiful bride, here is were I stand today...

It's a 1985 Starcraft Stardust 24 (land slug). It cost me $10 more than the Islander at $460.

Good news? I don't need to put even 60 seconds of work into it. It's ready to go:thumb:

Re: Starcraft Land Slug

i like it. to me, popups are the only trailers that make sense when you consider you have to TOW the durn things. or putting it another way, anything beyond that point and it's not "camping" AND you then get to experience the joys of 13mpg

you might come to like it. what sold me on VW campers was tenting in AZ one rainy weekend.....my buddy was 12" off the muddy ground while the girlfriend and i were sleeping on it. and when it came time to pitch camp, it took him 90 sec, not half an hour....

and a great bottom feeder buy, and it's a Starcraft. what's not to like?

Re: Starcraft Land Slug

It's in good shape, everything works like it should, pretty roomy for a popup.

Big king size bed on this side - that table drops down to make another double bed there...

Dance floor and queen bed...

Fridge, sink, furnace and plenty of storage over here...
P1100923.jpg

Big bench that'll pull out for another twin bed on this side...
P1100924.jpg

Nice 3 burner stove that hooks onto the outside of the camper, this will be my station...

OK, so yah, I am a man of compromise.

I am a RV owner.

My bride is very happy:thumb:

methinks a dry floor and that furnace may just extend your camping season up near the Artic circle or wherever it is you live. you'll still want to take the rifle in case of polar bears, tent sides won't slow em down much

OK, now time to strike while the iron is hot......time to bring that 25' hardtop home?

Re: Starcraft Land Slug

I can't find any fault with this purchase...

1) It's a starcraft
2) No flotation foam is involved.
3) It was cheap
4) No rehab required
5) Your bride is happy = more boating.

Camping with little kids is hard... this will be a good way to get the wife/daughter involved too. You can do more rugged (primitive) camps with the boys as they get older... If this gets the whole crew out for some time outside, then I am all for it.

I think you might actually use/enjoy it more than you think.... Plus, I can see this parked on a nice shore on one of the great lakes as a nice "base camp" for a full weekend of boating/fishing...

One of buddies just bought (and immaculately restored) an old Airstream, and its pretty cool.

Re: Starcraft Land Slug

PM said it all.

but.....do you need a small tinnie to ride on top of it? i forget what you still have and what you've sold. my long term retirement plans involve lots of traveling with the Admiral in Central and south america with our popup behind the VW camper, and either the portabote or a small tinnie on top of the popup. seems like the most economical way to bring our home and boat with us.

That goes with : I will Never, ever, ever, never, never, ever, ever finish the Islander! :watermelon:

I'm joking there. Nice tinny and wate.... road ready. She is roomy inside and no tent pegs to lose. Toss the little tinny on top - What more could you ask for. :D

Yah, I hear that! Anything worth anything around here is at least $1500. I saw just a couple in the $500 to $750 range but they were trashed, broken, rotted and mouse infested. True Starcraft bottom feeder action right here:thumb:

Uh, this may have actually crossed my mind :becky:

I hear ya buddy, all excellent points man:joyous:

I still have that MirroCraft in my signature there. With a roof rack, that would work just fine.

But really what I'm thinking is more of a long tern set up over on the shores of Lake Michigan for some salmon action. Like a week or two. Beautiful sandy beaches for the family to hang out. Salmon/steelhead/lake trout for dinner, oooo baby!:joyous::joyous:

Seeing the awning un-folded and your reference to Willa Wonka reminded me of this scene (yeah, I take in a few kids movies these days):

Just don't let the Lorax talk smack to your wife!

She's a real Land Yacht, Jason. The screened awning adds so much room and keeps the bugs down. That was a good find for the family.

You should see if it floats...and if it does, hang an OB somewhere .... then you won't need the islander. :p

See, this is one of the cool things about being a tinnie dude. Ever see someone post over in say.... the rinker subforum that they've got a rinker popup camper? Nice grab Jas, but I can't let my wife see this!

That said, you mentioned that it doesn't need any work. Knowing you.... it'll be in the garage this winter? Dancing pop-up anyone?

Re: Starcraft Land Slug

Real nice looking StarCraft Land Slug Jason, I have to share a little story about why I will never own on of those. Many many years ago the Admiral and I went camping with a couple that had one of those, we slept I out tent and were quite comfortable. About the third morning we were camping the wife and I were up early sitting at the picnic table about ten feet away from the end of the Land slug they were in. While we were having our coffee we heard some strange sound coming from the trailer which were quite similar to those that are made in the process of procreation!!! We looked at each other and giggled, about 10 seconds later the metal arms that support the bed came out of there mounts, and these two very naked, very startled and very embarrassed people were laying in the pine needles next to the picnic table. So make sure you secure those poles very well.:D

Nice find on the pop up! Starcraft also makes Travel Trailers. Don't tell your wife...

Oh, as for dozers story, what's the reason he won't own a popup? He's afraid of falling out while......?????
LOL.

Must be a V-drive, as I don't see an outboard or i/o.
Looks like it is missing the nav lights.

Still a good deal.

Now, you need 2 tow vehicles.
