Picked up an 1985 starcraft hl150 bout a month ago.has a 1985 40hp yamaha two stroke(40elk),an86 6hp yamaha "kicker",and a minn kota trolling motor.transoms ok,floors a little soft.planning to redo the transom, and floor, and would like to change the floor plan, build a front, and rear casting deck, and uncover the bow.the bow is currently covered with a skin riveted to the top of the gunwales.is it basically an open bow with a top riveted on?.will post pics when im past the minimum pist count.i currently have the motor torn down, and overhauling it.had a sacked piston.would like to get in the water before winter, and see if the 40 is gonna be satisfactory.we have alot of water here in north idaho to play in.i have had a boat for 40 years of my 58,but this is my first "tinny"i have really enjoyed looking at what others have done to their starcrafts, and hope mine is near as good when its done

That's pretty much how all of the Starcraft tin boats are built.. Convert to open bow is as easy as cut the hole and finish it. You don't want to remove the cap from the bow, like I think you are suggesting you would do

The bow-ectomy is a common practice, and as long as you replace some of the structure it provides, the bow cover can be removed.

Hope you still have the cast bow cap that covers the rubrail at the tip of the bow.

Dig in, lots of great rebuild topics, some of which are also bow-ectomies

Lets move this topic over there to the Starcraft forum

Thanks jbcurt00.i do have the cast alu piece.boat looks typical for us up here, short summers, long winters, equals low time, weather and time ravaged boats.

matt167.why leave the lid in place? .my thoughts were to build an aluminium grid 14"tall(think old school ice cube tray)tied into the sides of the boat, and then deck with 1/4 "ply, fabbing the grid into appropriate storage compartments.then add back a properly shaped gunwale.still undecided about console layout. I have a sheet metal brake to form the grid.i do have some experience bending tin that way from building race car interior metal.my thoughts were that it would be extremely lightweight, and very strong at the same time.

The reason i joined here was to get feedback from the members here.thank you!
