stalls when put in gear

1984 85 hp force stalls when i put it in gear, i read a few older posts about this and it seems to be linkage or diaghram in fuel pump. my linkage was mounted wrong so i fixed it but didnt help. fuel pump looks fine, could it be the timing ?? i know ive messed it up a bit trying to adjust it. someone must know the answer to this as its probably one of those simple things we over look. thanks from stumped and confused

Carbs may need a cleaning.

Idle should be 700 when in gear, in the water.

About 950 in neutral in the water.

hi, I've got an 1985, 85 hp Force which had the same problem. I found the float in my top carb was broken off the mount. I repaired it and cleaned my carbs and it ran great, but be carefull, i overheated the float a bit when i resoldered it causing the seal on it to leak, now my needle valve doesn't seat properly causing fuel to leak out of the carb. I hope this helps.

Are you sure that your ignition is working properly? I also have this same issue and was just able to diagnose it to a bad CD Pack. Motor was great until the first day of fishing!
