I have a 1986 35hp Mercury OB. I've had the carb and fuel pump rebuilt and it runs great. It has great compression. The problem is with the idle set correct it will stall when put in gear. If I raise the rpms nuetral idle it solves the problem, but I'm not happy with the higher rpms. Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: stalling at idle in gear

Im having the same issue with my 1976 MerCruser 165. I think it just needs to have the idle set up a little bit to keep it from stalling. Because all it needs is a little gas and she is fine.

Let me know if you find something other then the idle setting.

Re: stalling at idle in gear

To Jonathon 3206 - I took my boat out and it ran fine when throttle up in gear. When in gear at idle it would stall. I noticed that the squeeze bulb (primer) on fuel line would soften up a little when it stalled. If I would continue to squeeze the bulb occasionlly; Thus keeping up the pressure it idled fine.. I conclude that the problem is that it has a small air leak on the suction side of fuel pump or the fuel pump is still malfuncting. I checked the tank and fuel line from tank and no leaks. I put new clamps on the fuel lines on engine - line from engne connection to filter and from filter to fuel pump. I'll run it tomorrow and see. If that doesnt do it -new fuel pump. I originally had my pump rebuilt not replaced. I don't know how this applies to your problem. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I just replaced my fuel pump with a new one last week. Still had the same issue. But I have not tried to play with the idle screw on the carb yet.
