I am new here -so please let me know if I am in the wrong place - have a 16ft 1973 crestliner tin boat and 15hp 1999 Nissan 2 stroke motor - Last year I neglected to tune up or winterize motor - anyway this spring I managed
for the first time on my own to change the spark plugs , and so the gear oil
thing - which seems fine - took the boat out last week and after a number
of chokes and aore arm pulls got it started - It runs for a bit then stops
only way to get it started is to pull choke again and restart - I suspect
gas issues and am looking at putting in one of these fuel additives - either
the sta-bil marine or starbrite - - does anyone have any experience with these-
they seem to claim the same results but are made differntly!
-does this sound like it might solve the running issues - should I replace the fuel filter? the boat generally only runs a few weeks out of the year .

appreciate any comments
thank you

Could be anything, but sounds like a fuel issue. Need more diagnostic symptoms to deally be sure.

Dump any fuel older than 30 days. Flush all fuel lines, Change filter if it looks bad, or is quite old. May need a carb cleaning. Likely varnishing in the low-speed circuit. Adding a water-separating filter isn't a bad thing. Always run the carb dry if sitting for more than a week, and drain it over the winter. Stabilizer is OK, and may extend the life of fuel some, but is never a substitute for fresh fuel. Do not overdose on stabilizer, as that, combined with water, can leave you with a corrosive gel in the carb.

thanks for the response - will get new gas - and filter and work from there
to start - I could spend more time getting it going than I will be using it
otherwise it seems like a pretty good solid motor - these stabilizers seem to do wonderful things according to their own promotions - I never even heard of them before - wonder what people did before stabilizers?

Re: stalling 15 hp nissan

Years ago, the gas was better. It had more stability in and of itself. Better and more additives at the refinery. Since most cars run through a tank in a couple of weeks, and now have sealed fuel systems, they aren't as affected by the poorer stability of the fuels. Small engines, with naturally-vented tanks, and marine applications in particular (since the humidity tends to be higher on the water) are more succeptible to problems caused by the junk gas of today, especially with E-10 fuels. OB's that are 2006 EPA-rated, typically run leaner to begin with, and have smaller carb passages to do that, and as a consequence, are even more prone to varnishing problems than older models.
