Stall in reverse

Put my boat in the water for the season and it stalls out when i try to give it gas in reverse. Runs fine when in forward. What would cause this. Its a 140 mercruiser i/o in a 1984 galaxy

Short (lower) shift cable bad or slide cavity full of corrosion.

Lower shift cable, shift shaft bushings need to be replaced.

Eric, whats happening in both explanations is the shift interupt is kick in and killing the engine due to those conditions. Its' supposed to only operate when coming OUT of Gear F/R to Neutral.
