I have outdrive paint over spray and general river muck on my stainless wheels and would like to brighten them up a little before I launch. It?s been like this for a couple of seasons now and this weekend I tried using goof off, it helped a little but not much. Is there something that I can use to clean them up without having to take the propellers off the drive? Thanks.

Your post is a little confusing, stainless wheels, taking propeller off drive??? Either way the product I found best for all metals is brasso, home depot sells it...I've tried tons of products, this stuff works the best.

Ayuh,.... SSteel, steelwool will clean 'em up...

If you want Bright, 'n Shiney, you'll need a buffing wheel, after the steelwool...

Btw,... Steel, steelwool will leave carbon tracks, that'll rust...

Bond-o, thanks for the reply...are you saying that I will get the carbon tracks if I don't buff the wheels after using the steel wool? Or once I use the steel wool I'll get rust no matter what?

SnoBol toilet cleaner shines them up wonderfully. I've seen Cameo work well also. A couple guys here at the marina swear by Propspeed for protection after cleaned.

Good Luck!

I use diluted muriatic acid. Mix 50/50 with water and rinse the bejesus out of it. Gets all the "Creature From The Black Lagoon" muck off my whole boat- prop, outdrive, hull, etc........ Not sure how well it'd work on paint overspray. Prop comes out all shiny and bright.
If you choose to do this, be careful- add the acid to the water, not the reverse. Protect yourself, and rinse, rinse, rinse.
Then when you're all done, rinse.

Sounds like "acid" seems to be the theme...I assume that the SnoBol cleaner has some sort of acid in it too.

Heck, I use to use Oven Cleaner on the transom to get off painted lettering not too long just enough to see the paint bubble and then wipe and rinse.

Re: Stainless steel propeller maintenance question

I Just got back from the boat yard with a little before and after, what do you think?
So I went with a cleanser that I found at the HD called Bar Keepers Friend, the can said it was great on SS and rust and I think it lived up to the claim, used the powder though it comes in a liquid too. I couldn?t find stainless-steel steel wool locally, so I went with a non scratch Scotch-Brite pad (the blue ones) and only used two. Finished it off with some Brasso and a rag. Start to finish about 2 hours and lots of elbow grease!

There's a Mass Metal Polish(Walgreens Drug store), and buy a small cotton polishing wheel or "bob" (the kind you chuck in a 3/8" Drill)at the hardware store, and go to it, if you want a mirror finish.
