I bought this boat about two months ago, with the understanding that it was going to take some work to get it back in the water. The engine was locked up and the interior was gone. Fixed the engine, and before I went ahead and did the interior thought I take a look at the underside of the floor in a few spots. What I found was not good. Where the stringers go is dust. The foam like a big sponge of water. To do the stringers I know the engine needs to come out but is it okay to leave the boat on the trailer. Also the boat was at one time had a ski locker and a cooler in the middle of the floor. On the bottom of the two is a flat layer of fiberglass with a hole in it to let water drain into the V part of the hull and back into the bilge, or water from the bilge to drain into the locker and cooler. Anyway thought it was a good idea and was woundering if it would hurt to do that to the entire hull to stop water being trped in the front part of the hull. I have done a few searches and douglas fir seems to be the choice for stringers, if my info is wrong please let me know.

I did mine on my trailer, I blocked the trailer so it would be solid and level. I compartmentized my hull bottom where there was no foam from the factory for storage and a built in ice chest. I used 4 inch PVC as a mould to fiberglass over to form a bilge channel so water could drain from anyplace in the hull. I used plywood for my stringers as thats what the factory used. On some of the stringers I cut the old wood out with a chainsaw leaving the fiberglass sides in place and placed new plywood and lots of epoxy back into it.

I was leaning towards leaving it on the trailer as well, its a closed bow so I figured that should help hold the shape. One thing that struck me kid of funny though is that there is or was no fiberglass around the stringers. Just bare wood. I wounder if this the second or thrid time this has been done.

qaztwo,

It's perfectly OK to leave it on the trailer.

I've done several similar projects and had no problems, as long as:

1. The trailer is set up right. Good support all over.

2. The deck is on, which you are already doing.

Most boat builders encapsulate the stringers. You may be right, it may have been done before. We'll never know.

However, it sounds like you want to do it right.

Do not, create any areas that water can stand. Let it drain, drain, drain. Dry is a good thing.

Your choice of wood is a good one. Just make sure it's Kiln dried.
