Spun driveshaft on 2001 40hp OMC question

Question: What, other than hitting a rock or stump and rusting, could cause the driveshaft on the powerhead side to strip the splines?

Question #2: If the driveshaft splines are spun, what are the chances that the crankshaft spline grooves are still good? My neighbors did this and the grooves still look o.k. Are the driveshaft splines softer metal and therefore designed to strip vs. the crank? I was hoping for one of you experts that have seen this problem before to hopefully provide your experience on this one. I'm hoping for my neighbor not to have a ruined crankshaft!!!

thanks,
JBJ

The old rule of thumb is: If you have worn out or spun d/s splines something is out of alignment, exhaust housing, g/c and ect. If it breakes with a very clean break it's normally a high speed impact.

Boobie, Couls the gearcase have been installed w/o mating the splines/ Would that destroy the crank splines? Is there a repair for it?

No. They mate up when installing the g/c in the p/h.
