Are both spray in and pour in place foams going to work inside the hull of a boat? do they give the same charictaistics?Pour in is hard to come by unless you want 45 gallons of each chemical and installers will spray on a cost per cubic foot
Thanks

As far as I know the spray on foam is a 1 part foam that is NOT water proof. The two part pourable foam is not hard to get have you looked Here?

If you are talkin about foam inlulation it would be fine. The stuff I have used is polyurethane, and is catalized in the spray nozzle. I always thought that method of spraying would work quite well. It can be dificult to trim the excess, but dooable...Chief

The stuff they are spraying is 2 part polyurathane and it does catalize in the nozzle it is also heated before spraying to maximize expansion.I can have it sprayed for $15.00 a cubic foot ,im figuring 24 cubic feet at a cost of about $360 Canadain passos. Pour in will cost about $330.00 Canadain Passos. .Do you get better structural support from pour in? Because the cost difference is neglagable. P.S. for all us Cannuks we can buy foam at Industrial Paints and Plastics in 4, 16, and 40 quart kits

Re: spray in vs pour in place foam

last time I checked http://www.fiberglassservices.com/ had 2lb pour foam for 48.00 for a 2 gallon kit (1 gallon each part) which does about 8 cubic feet. They sell it in quarts,gallons,5 gallons, and 55 gallon drums. Also comes in 2,4,8,16 lb varieties. I would use pour in, just cuz I know thats what will work in boats. For max floatation, use 2 lb the higher the lb rating, the more structure support it gives, but the less floatation, at least that is my understanding of it.

if foaming fuel tanks, you need at least 4 lb to meet USCG regulations but I don't know Canadien laws.

The pourable stuff is polyurethane as well but not sure if its the same.

Also don't get it on your skin, its a pain to get off.

I would use pourable just because you can take your time when doing it, if you put to much in a closed space, it can "overexpand" and break things apart, possibly cracking the hull

Re: spray in vs pour in place foam

Pour and spray are the same foam but applied differently. Spray is faster and done with the floor or deck off. It lets the applicator hit every nook and cranny to give converage you can't get when pouring through a few holes. Spray also sticks to vertical surfaces and that can't be done pouring. Either way works but like jimmythekid says, pouring can be a disaster if you use too much.

Fiberglass services company,I used them for foam and gelcoats in the past, great to work with if you need any info! When shipping any of the above, its best to not order any MEK,Haz Mat steps in to play.Just ask them the best way to go for shipping.

Hey Glutton,
You can order pourable foam from Noah's in Toronto and they'll ship across the country with Purolator. Go to their web site at noahsmarine.com. They've got some of my money already.

Why make a mess in the boat ? Make or buy the foam, closed cell, into the shapes you need in the hull-- outside of the hull. You really don't want to EVER have to remove that foam later. USCG simply requires the foam to be held in place so it does not float out while the boat is sinking. Fibreglass or nylon strap- nothing fancy.

But is the foam not intended for structure as well? I would hate to have lost the vibration dampening and support if this is the case
