I'm new to boating, and I have a very confusing question. I'll try my best to describe it adequately.
I have a 1996 Bayliner with a SportJet 120XR. I bought the boat last summer and it ran great. At the end of the season, I sucked the tow rope into the impeller and the engine stopped HARD. It wouldn't run at all after that, and it was the end of the season, so I decided to figure it out in the spring.
Someone suggested that my timing was probably off. I pulled the flywheel, and the key was good. Cylinder 1 is at TDC when the 0 degree mark on the flywheel matches the line on the engine (measured roughly with a wooden rod in the cylinder).
A mechanic told me that the center triggering magnets on the flywheel sometimes come loose, so I checked that and it was tight. I then used a timing light to check the timing on #1 @ WOT, and it was at 14 (not 32). I guessed the magnets must have moved, and decided to lengthen the linkage that moves the trigger so that I could see if it would run if I advanced it 18 degrees (standard linkage won't move it that far -this was just for a test). It started and ran great, more responsive than ever, until the tab on the trigger hit the bracket that holds the stator and broke off (repaired temporarily with super glue until I figure out what's wrong).
This is when I realized (via this forum) that I had checked for 32 BTDC incorrectly. I advanced my throttle by pulling out the small knob on the remote that lets you advance throttle in neutral and still crank. It doesn't advance near as far as when you are "in gear". When I disconnected the throttle cable at the engine and checked timing with the original link setup, it was right around 32 BTDC.
So, now I am back to where I started. I know that the flywheel matches #1, that there is fuel and spark, and that it will start and run well when advanced 18 degrees too far. When I try to start it at the recommended advance setting, it just cranks and cranks, not even a little catch.
Any ideas?
