Sploosh went my only ignition key - ideas on a replacement?

Hi folks, my first post and it's a good one. My floaty-type key ring busted tonight and the ONLY FRIGGING key that mattered (the ignition key) splashed into 30 feet of murky lake water.

So now I'm wondering how to get a replacement. Does anybody know of an outfit that could produce a replacement key based on serial number, model numbers, etc.?

I was thinking I could remove the ignition switch entirely and bring to a locksmith, but I didn't want to invest that time if there was a simpler/better answer.

Many, many thanks for any suggestions (other than you're screwed!) :)

Thanks,
Tom

Just get a new switch with key, it will be cheaper, easier and a lot less trouble...sorry for your misfortune, but there are many of us, that have been there and done that~!

depends on the motor; some are easy to match. do you have your owners' manual?

now you know--make lots of copies and scatter them everywhere

If the switch has a number on it you may be able to have a locksmith make a key without having to remove the switch. I have had this done on a few odd items. Seems to me the last one cost about $8.00.

I know I once had to travel back and forth three times to get the key right, he made new ones each time. I was able to file the others and get them to work also.

I also have found a small screwdriver can sometimes work on an old switch.

Hope you find a quick and easy solution.

I don't know why people are so afraid of hiring a craftsman. Just have a locksmith come out and make you a few new keys. They do it all the time.

A little common sense goes a long way here..... Carry a spare set of keys with you at all times......... And keep another set at home. That way you always have a spare to duplicate, if required.

I would just pull the switch and replace it. Easiest fix. Plus, if you get other keys made for the old switch while it's out, you now have a spare ignition switch on board if the in-use one goes Kaput while you are out enjoying the water.

Because a new Sierra ignition switch for most boats costs $15 and you get 2 new keys with it. Crazy to pay a mobile locksmith to make a key for a boat.

Secret toggle kill switch, and a nice shiny red push button start. Screw the key.
