howdy all

i've been looking at my local wood choices and have not been able to come up with what i want to use.I can special order Dug Fir lumber kiln dried but thet will take some time to recieve.ply on the other hand is ready available for the task.just one problem.ply only comes in 8ft length.i will need significantly longer in order to replace the srtingers in this boat.my only optio it seems will be to splice the ply together.i'm figuring that a stagered joint about 18 inches should be about right.any ideas, or tips on the matter?

Mine were spliced from the factory and I replaced them the same way. I tapered the edges of the splice to when I glassed them I wasn't going around a 90 degree angle.

hadent thought of puting a taper on them.but thinking ill set it with a 45 deg on the end the way you would for trim in a house would add a bit to strength. the splice will be about 3 or 4 feet from the end.closest to the bow.with a stagered splice and at 45 deg it should hold very nicely

Do a compound 45 deg splice. It would be even better.

Ok now, I'll take it slow, ok? :D :D I assume that you would make a 45 deg cut from top to bottom, appearing diagonal from the side, right? The compound part comes in by making your diagonal cut at 45 deg across the thickness of the board so when you look at it from the top, the actual butt joint is also at a 45. Most modern cutoff saws can make compound cuts.

Re: splicing plywood stringers.

ok think i got the idea.basicly i would have two 45 deg angles.one from the side and one from the top.but all done as one cut.hmmm.will have to mess up a bit of scrap material before i throw that on a stringer.sounds like a good idea.i have a compound mitersaw and a good adjustable table saw bothe of which can do the job depending on material size.the first cut will be simple but makint the second cut on the ajoining piece of wood will try to twist my noodle.thanks for the idea. ill play with some scrap material a bit and see ifin i can get the hang of it.
